Following cancellation of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Strike created a Youth Mentorship Program, with the goal of furthering our values of equity and community even though we couldn’t meet in person.
The program, which was open to high school and college age girls, women, non-binary people and those with other marginalized gender identities, matched Strike players and staff with youth in small groups which met virtually throughout the year. Participants discussed a variety of topics related to ultimate (from team dynamics, skills, strategy and planning practices, to trying out for college teams to discussions of gender and racial equity), as well as navigating life during the pandemic.
Participants reflected positively on the experience, particularly noting the value of lasting connections made between mentors and mentees. We look forward to another session of the program in the future.
